Signs you have a head lice infestation

A head lice infestation is one of those things that every parent dreads. Although head lice don’t spread any serious diseases, their bites and saliva can make a child’s scalp very itchy. Continuous scratching could eventually lead to an infection. Since head lice can easily spread from one person to the next it is advisable to treat them immediately you notice an infestation.

Signs that you have a lice infestation

•Lice eggs (nits) – These will look like tiny yellow, brown or tan dots before they actually get to hatch. They will be found in areas close to the scalp where it is warm and ideal for them to hatch. In some cases, nits may resemble dandruff, however, you will not be able to shake or brush them off. You can use a bright light and a magnifying glass to identify nits if you suspect your child may have come in contact with lice.

•Adult lice – An adult louse will look greyish-white or tan and resemble a sesame seed. Baby lice (nymphs) take approximately 1 to 2 weeks to grow into adults. If the infestation is not treated, the process will keep repeating itself after every 3 weeks. Even though lice feed on blood a couple of times a day, they can survive off the scalp for a period of two days.

•Scratching – Depending on your child’s skin sensitivity, scratching may not begin right away. It can take a number of weeks before some kids begin showing signs of scratching. They may get a tickling sensation on their scalp or feel like something is moving.

•Bumps and sores – As the kid scratches, some bumps, rashes, and sores may develop. It the scratching is left unchecked, then your kid could easily develop a bacterial infection.
